The Carolina Panthers find themselves as favorites for the first time this season as they host the Chicago Bears for Week 6.
Before the season started, odds makers had the Bears listed as a -2.5 favorite in this matchup. Now, the Panthers have rattled off three straight wins and are starting to become overvalued in the betting market. Their preseason win total was 5.5 & that was for good reason. Through 5 games, they rank 31st in sacks, pressure rate, & rushing yards per attempt.
This should be a matchup where Nick Foles has an opportunity to shine. He’ll have time to throw as Carolina can't pressure the quarterback and the offense will finally be able to run the ball as Carolina can't stop the run. The Bear's offense has struggled to run the ball against their last two opponents, the Colts & Buccaneers. This comes as no surprise as both the Bucs & Colts defensive unit's rank in the top 5 of almost every defensive category. Meanwhile, The Panthers allow a staggering 60% of opponent’s rushing attempts to be successful while ranking 28th in defensive DVOA per Football Outsiders’.
For the Panthers to have a chance at winning this game, they'll have to rely heavily on Bridgewater & the offense. That is a hard ask while going up against the Bear’s elite defense which ranks 7th in defensive DVOA and allows only 41% (best in the NFL) of their opponent’s passing attempts to be successful.
